So that's start
two hours discussiong
so first of all
As for me, I think that Chapter 18 "Writing about Film" is my favorite chapter
Me too.
And your report also impressed me.
MOVIE
We could connect the chapter with "Understanding Movies"
It's good~
Oh I am flattered
haha
I THINK
The clips you chose connect with our Film class.
Run Lora Run
When we are talking about movies, I think I would come up with Jerome Class~
or stewart
stewart also talks movie in the oral training class
It's impressive to see the same clips in different classes!
And analyze the photography. Just like what we do on Jerome's class.
but can't put more emphasis on movie
Yes. I think we can talk about some writing skill in the text book.
Our group is talking about "Writing about Literature".
There are some things have to do when we are going to write or analyze the literature work.
I think it also applies to our reading in English or American literature.
We need to know what the author wants to express first.
and provide our own interpretation.
Yes, and that's really important, too
i think we can list some important writing skills
yeah
Recongnize your purpose.
The first main point in chapter 11 and chapter 12. (Description and Narration)
Put your purpose under arrangement
yeah the writing skill
argumentation
decription
By the way, we have to know who are the readers
To interest the readers~
with your own topic!
You need to make your readers be convinced.
Some experiences can support your perspective.
You are right
so we have to divide our paper in many parts
So we have to choose our subject carefully
Also, choose to describe things in objective or subjective way.
And supporting our ideas with some research.
yeah
and try to convince audieance
audience
you really did point out the point
Make readers see what you have found out and feel as your feeling.
Yeah, things that can move us can have stonger impact in our heart
It's just like Approach to American Literature
HAHA
and oral training
gee gee
Yup~
HA~The same skills can be used in all the classes.
All roads lead to Rome.
That's OK
THAT'S
WE DON'T CARE THAT MUCH
HAHA
Besides, we can make our essays vivid by using sensory details.
yeah
tha;t the description
the chapter i report
Sight, hearing, smell
so it's the writting skill
Always asking "WHY" is also important
And with some logic in writting skills.
After finishing writing the articles, we have to revise them.
"Ask Why"
can be related to the Accounting class XD
so that;s the chapter 5
1. What is the most interesting part and persuasive point in your essay.
It is also needed when we are reading a story or poem.
2.Is your topic too broad or too narrow
3. What aspects might need more work
4.Does specific idea support your idea
Give out your position
That's what we have to check out
I agree your point
Yup.
All of the writing skill could be used in different types of writing
Yeah. You listed the points we should pay attention to.
After writing, we also need to revise~
Many problems in sentence clarity involve errors in grammar, punctuation, word choice and usage.
How to organize your essay effectively is significant.
Sometimes the readers might have trouble to understand.
1. Give your sentences content.
2. Make your sentences specific.
3. Avoid overpacking your sentences.
4. Fix fragments
5. Pay attention to word order.
This is the important points in Chapter 6.
yeah
so it seems that we have lots of things to talk
That is talking about how to make our meanings clear in each sentences.
yes
I think developing a concise style is also important~
tha's true
It is necessary to build argument when we are writing.
Explore the possibilities and your opinions.
Anticipate opposing views.
The classmates' comments are also very helpful~
In chapter 10 for example, when writing an argumentation esay, we have to use "appropriate tone"
Just like what Claire and I do. We have different standpoint toward abortion.
yeah
yeah
different people can find out one another's weak point
they could offer us some precious opinion
Yup~
And we also have to fight with each other to strengthen our viewpoint.
that;s right
Others' pointview can complement our views.
fight with othersXD
The point of view.
I usually fight with Elsa in the dorm. XXD
XDD
cool
No. That's not true~~~~
Haha
Since both of us are making the same topic.
I would so much like to hit my room mates
by discussing your topics, I think you can really get some new ideas
new concept
YEAH
i agree with it
seeing the opposite point of views, you can find ways to "fight" back people that's in different position
and other people will also give you advice
Yeah.
Maybe we can talk about some problems should be avoid.
grammar false
unorganized article
wrong word choice.
Sudden change in perspective.
It also pointed out some problems about errors in grammar
yap
In Chapter 21,also, talks of the importance of using punctuation
Yes~
that's also the problems we should avoid
It does help~
Yes. It is the basic problems we should pay attention to.
But after getting lots of information in writing skills, I think when I start to write something, I still lose some points.
It is hard to achieve all the points, so we have to learn and revise.
Revising is important
so we need to overcome these obstacles
The order of time and space the transitional words are needed to be consider. (Chapter 3)
Repetition of key words~
When we arrange the paragraphs
To present a clear thesis.
The beginnings and endings are the main factors to attract the readers.
YES
YEAH
Don't introduce new points or irrelevant material.
you guys really point out many ideas
but we think we need to organized them
Yup~
by the way
I THINK THAT
Chapter 14 is really important
YEAH
I learned the style this semester
that's what teacher focus on
why
before, I would just post the website
or simply paste the name of the author
and would not do it in the rigt form
It is also important to search the online databases with concise keyword.
It's important to have work cited.
I usually ignored the citation in the past, too.
It's easy to forget
haha
take advantage of the websites
the digital resourses
yeah
So shall we start to organize our conversation
First of all, we have to discover our writing. We have to change our style of writing and the form of composing our works so as to meet different readers request.
Organize our writings with clear thesis statement, and remenber do not be vague in the writing.
We can make our paper better by revising.
Pay attention to our writings by using precise words and punctuation.
Avoid grammar and puntuation problems.
Do not confuse the readers.
Class discussion is also important. We can talk with our friends about our topics.
Everyone of us may point out the strong and weak point of our works.
Organize each paragraph logically. Make the argument and your interpretation clearly.
yeap
so let's divide our discussion into many parts
first, the general ideas about this book?? whcih parts affect you the most
Some general ideas have mentioned before.
I think the book gives me a useful skills about writing; And I think all of the parts are essential for me to develop the issue. Different parts focus on different skills.
Later on could we compose our 500 words of book review by using some of the sentences in our conversation
Or shall we write the entire one with different styles and ways
so do we need to distribute these jobs
Maybe it works.
or we need to find someone to puzzle our discussion up
I do not know what the teacher wants
haha
Me, either.....
XDD
She wants us to introduce the book
and point out what's our favorite part of the book.
so how shall we divide our work
first, who is responsible to make a concise introduction of this book?
and then
some people do the middle parts
what are our favorite parts
this can use our diologues
what do you think about
Or we could compose it with the dialogue over here
can we?
I don't think it is a good idea to separate one article into four parts
Yes~
I think we can take advantage of the dialogues.
and write the chapter we liked
yeah
this mentioned beforeXD
We can write the introduction, our favorite and impressed chapters, and then what we have used in our paper.
YEAH
Do you mean that we have to introduce some main points in each chapter Each one provide introduction of some chapters
I agree.
So~
So~
the generanl introduction of this book
genearl introduction
I can organize that in the papers
just like you need to introduce this book to other people
by means of the dialogue
and I would send them to one of you
That's all?
and then send it to the third people
and to the forth
how about that
I think I can do that part myself
She wants us to introduce the book
and point out what's our favorite part of the book.
So?
what
so we would do the separate part
so who is going to combine ti
it
We need to have the same introduction?
the generanl introduction of this book
Sorry, I do not know what I should do now
I will do that
just like you need to introduce this book to other people
only a person need to do that
sopia will be responsible for the introduction
Thank you.
then we need two person to organize our diologue
and do the middle part
to form the introduction
explain some chapter that you think important
Ok. Claire and I can take it

you can form the introduction with me

thanks you
it's close to the end
so touching
The End
More than hours
haha
AND
after we finish our parts
we need to organize again
to make the article smooth
and coherent
when will you finish it
I would put them on blog before 1/2

just put the blogger

Ideology- Queer Cinema
Louis Giannetti (1997). Understanding Movies, p.483-p.489.
Annotation:
“ The gay Liberation Movement drew much of its inspiration from other revolutionary groups of the 1960s, especially feminism and the Black Liberation Movement. There was a difference, however. Whereas women and people of color could not pretend to be ‘ the other,’ most homosexuals could pass for straight. They often did- and still do- because of the social prejudice against them. ” The ideology of the issue had brought in the thrive in queer cinema.
In the paragraph, it mentioned the psychology of the homosexuals, and the different theory on the issue. The researchers as Kinsey and Masters and Johnshon regarded all sexual behavior as learned, not innate. Freud thought that the sexual tendency was influenced by social conventions. Thus, everybody must learn what’s a “ normal” sexually. On the other hand, other researchers believe that homosexuality is inborn. Recent medical findings proved that the brain structure is the cause of sexual tendency. Homosexuals did not choose to be gays/ lesbians; it chooses them. As for them, their sexual tendency is natural. Some people would not tell people the truth if they were homosexuals for fear that they might be discriminated. However, still a lot of people tend to accept the fact and told the public. According to the paragraph, 10 percent of the American population is homosexual; as high as 33 percent of people have had at least one homosexual experience. Many people believe the idea because everybody has his/ her masculine and feminine sides.
Some actors and actresses told the public the truth, and much to their surprise, they were still popular and favored by people. McKellen is a leading gay activist, and also a famous actor. He once said, “ I’ve had enough of being a gay icon! Since I came out, I keep getting all these parts and my career’s taken off. I want a quiet life. I’m going back into the closet. But I can’t get back into the closet, because it’s absolutely jam-packed full of other actors.” From the speech, we knew that his career did go smoothly well, and even better after he came out of the closet; people did not treat him as a weirdo. However, the stereotype in the public still forced most actors to stay in the closet. In my opinion, homosexuals could only feel relieved and truly accept themselves when they themselves get rid of the stereotype.

I agree with your opinions in the last paragraph. I think sometimes the obstacles which are hard to removed are the stereotypes we confine ourselves in. The homosexuality is not the shame only when we first accept it.

No matter how the sexual tendency formed, people discriminate against homosexuals by stereotype. You give a good example about an actor who admitted that he himself is a gay. However, even those homosexuals accept themselves, how can they get rid of the stereotype of the public?

Here comes another problem: Even those homosexuals accept themselves, how can they get rid of the stereotype of the public? As far as I am concerned, we could not bother everyone’s stereotype and their attitudes toward things; as long as homosexuals accept themselves first, they could live in broaden minds. The author mentioned that homosexuality is nature born. In the other words, it has something to do with the chromosome(explain this term). Most people might think that there was deep-rooted stereotype against gays and lesbians in the public. However, as time passed by, the author pointed out that sometimes it was the homosexuality that had the “ discrimination” against themselves. They searched for a therapy so as to change themselves into so-called “ ordinary people” (straight guys.) Some may succeed eventually, but most could not. Most people have the tendency of being homosexuality; thus, the environment may affect some of them in some way. That is to say, some people could accept both genders. From the other aspect, some homosexuality could not change their sexual tendency if they have strong genetic tendencies.

There was an example of a couple in the article. Matt Avery was once a gay for most of his young adulthood, but afterwards, he married a woman. With this example, some people claim that Matt’s life was based on an illusion and that he could not possibly be a good father and husband. “ Pressured by the society- a society that dislikes and shuns guys- Matt has simply run back inside the closet.” “ Gay activists favor this perspective at least in part because survey data showed that people are more sympathetic to gay cause if they believe that sexual orientation is immutable.” (page number, cite sources)
The article also talked of(informal register) religious causes. “ According to the book of Leviticus, homosexuality- at least when practiced by males- is prohibited, punishable by death.” (page)In addition, some therapists even held that homosexuality was a psychological disorder. Fortunately, these concepts had changed afterwards. I had strong feelings(about what) when I read the sentence: “ It was largely gays themselves- understandably tired of being viewed as freaks of nature- who began to assert that their orientation was not pathological.” (page)In my opinion, it was a nice change of their thoughts.
To talk of the influence of the environment, Matt’s example could also explain it. “ My whole life, was defined by whomever I was with- whomever I could use to make up for my own faults.” (page)This could be the support of the viewpoints of social influence.

Revision of the exam essay
Huang Hsin-Ya
Due to the fact that most students are unaware of many literary forms, such as technical paper, and essay, teachers would teach students how to write description, narration, evaluation, and classification paper so as to complete different kinds of works, including expressive, persuasive, informative, literary works for audience of all types. As time passed by, instead of merely asking students to write articles in hands, teachers tend to teach students with the use of computers, because it was said that writing for nonprint media was the most profitable ways for professional writers; thus, it was worthy to let children to get used to network resources.
Now that people mostly would prefer to use words to show their thought to the other people, it is essential for us to learn how to converse our thought into language. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, that teachers should equip students with all those knowledge about how to write is really an important things. After learning all the writing styles and finishing composing their writings, students should know how to revise them and consider whether their writings are suitable for their audience. In other words, their writings should arouse the interest of their audience. It is difficult to write composition in a limited time, because writing is a process that includes a variety of works. Firstly, we should have some thought to the issue about what we are going to write. Secondly, we have to compose our ideas into words. In this process, we have to gather information. With all the information, we are able to compose our writings. Thirdly, after finishing our compositions, we have to revise them. All these jobs need a lot of time. Accordingly, I totally agree with the concept that the writing should not be done in a limited of time.
With all the processes, the compositions may not be good enough to be called excellent ones. We have to put some other factors into consideration. If we are trying to write articles to convince other people, we have to make our writings persuasive; it would be better for us to read them over again and again to make sure whether they contained enough evidence and examples. To make our writings seemed persuasive, it was better that we should not just express our ideas through mere narration, but we should think of ways to make them look informative. On the other hand, when writing argumentation articles, try to point out our viewpoints clearly and make them be specifically clear. All these examples showed that it was really not an easy task to compose good articles, so we need teachers to guide us at school.
Recently a lot of information has been posted on the Internet. It is very convenient if we can surf the Internet and find things that we can put in our articles. Accordingly, I think that the author had pointed out the idea of teacher’s using the computer to guide the students learning quite convincingly.

Editing or revising suggestions
For Joyce:
I think that you could read over your article again and pay attention to the conjunction problems and then revise it. You stated out the summary and the reflection in a separable way and that made it quite clear. However, you could think of another way to connect each paragraph.
For Dimitri:
You had given the examples of the benefit of using the computer to support the article and I think that it was great. You might think of changing some singular forms into plural forms. I do not have any suggestion for your revising work; however, you could minimize the summary if you want to.
For Ocean:
The sentences in your article are mostly long, and I think that you might think of breaking those sentences into shorter ones. By doing so, it would become easier for the readers to read and thus, have better understanding. In addition, separating your article into different paragraph would be a good choice. It provided readers an easier way to distinguish from the summary and your own reflection.
For Candy:
In the first paragraph, there is a sentence that sounded weird to me; it seemed that you did not finish the sentence. ( “ To think of the main sentence, thesis statement, supporting point of views and conclusion.” ) I think that you might read the article again and correct some spelling mistakes and also check out if you want to add some missing words into your article. By the way, at the very beginning, you stated out the source of the article, and that was cool.
For Wang Chen Sin:
You might want to correct some of the spelling mistakes and reconsider to put some conjunctions in the article. In addition, also think that if you want to change some singular nouns into plural ones. To make the article smoother, you might read it over again and then revise it.
For Claire:
In the first paragraph, I could not understand the sentence: “ how to combine their thought unfolded into many audience rather than sole instructors” and so could I not understand this one: “ so it’s human to decide the writing not form do decision of us” in the last paragraph. There are some spelling mistakes that you might want to change them, and furthermore, also add some prepositions in some places.
For Yi-Ju Chen:
You combined the article with the knowledge that you had learned in class and that was cool. There are some spelling mistakes that you might want to change them. In the last paragraph, you did point out your point of views. I think that your work is fine already. You can just think about how to make it better and better.
For Elsa:
With most of the ideas that had been mentioned in the original article that you were revising, you had stated your own ideas, too. You might want to change some of the tense in the article. At the end, you had pointed out most students’ problem: not knowing how to think out of the box. However, to tell the truth, I am not quite sure if the last paragraph was needed.
For Vivi:
You had added some of your own experience in the reflection and that was cool. Furthermore, you had stated your point of view in the last paragraph and that corresponded to the condition of a good reflection. However, there are some tense and grammatical problems that you might want to consider changing them.
For Roxy:
It is for sure that the Internet offers us lots of information so that it is more convenient for us to find the sources that we need on it. First of all, I think you might change the word “ internet” into “ the Internet.” There are a couple of tense problems that you might want to correct them. Furthermore, you forget to add conjunction between nouns. I think that your summary is cool.

Midterm Summary and Exam Essay
Most people have focused more on the processes of planning, composing, revising, and publishing. Response Essays
I can easily get your main point from your topic. It does forecast the thesis in your following paragraph. However, you can rethink your topic and make it a sexier one. You have pointed out the two opposite attitudes of the public about whether it is good or bad to have plastic surgery, but you did not tell the reader your point of view yet. So you might think of adding your viewpoint about the issue. By the way, I think you have stated the arguments well. ( Joyce)
As a reader, when I saw your topic, I could understand what you were going to talk about in your article. Thus, I think you have a clear topic. The issue you have brought out was really a controversial one. You did point out your point of view about the issue: innocent animals are abandoned in the first paragraph, but you might want to emphasize your viewpoint more directly in the first paragraph. I realize that you strengthen your idea at the last paragraph, but do you want to do it both in the first paragraph and the last one? Also, you can talk more about your viewpoint.( Candy)
I think that you did give the readers a clear idea about what you were going to mention in your article from the topic you have given. You stated your point of view well, and by the relevant information you gave out, I was convinced by your viewpoint! ( Elsa)
I can easily understand the content before I read the article. You have pointed out the different point of views about the issue. However, you did not tell the readers your own opinion about the issue. You might want to add some of it in your article. Furthermore, I think that you can give out more ideas on the debate. By doing so, you may convince your audience. ( Claire)

Gay Genes, Revisited.
By: LeVay, Tim; Hamer. Scientific American, May 1994, Vol. 270 Issue 5, p44, 6p Abstract: Two pieces of evidence, a structure within the human brain and a genetic link, point to a biological component for male homosexuality [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER] (AN 14327844)
link
Annotation:
Different sides of the scientists were arguing whether homosexuality had something to do with chromosome X. Some thought that the sexual tendency was the cause of genes, while other thought that that was not being proved yet.

Reflection
The topic of my paper is “ Could Gay be gay?” As for the second word “ Gay,” it contained double meanings: “ happy” as an adjective, and “ homosexuals” as a noun. Thus creates an interesting pun and so this topic could be dealt either with emotional aspect or simply with optional aspect. Due to the fact that the topic could be discussed in broad views, it makes the process of writing the issues all the more difficult. In my first draft, I tried to put emphasis on the perspective on the scientific areas. I gathered many scholars’ ideas and tried to find out the related ideas and also found some interesting ideas on the topic.
There are a lot of methods in writing such issues as my topic; one of them is to start from the point of views of the scientists, and the other is to start from the aspects of cultural matters. If I am to deal with the problems of science, I should start with finding all those scientific jargons and then make attempt to figure out all the meanings of the terms that may appear in the relevant resources I have found. On the other hand, if I want to focus on the psychological sides of the homosexuals, I have to start and interview with some of the gays and lesbians. Teacher said that I could write my papers by means of three ways. Firstly, I can choose to focus on the scientific position. Secondly, I can write my papers in the view of psychological position. The last choice is to arrange both sides of viewpoints into my articles. As long as I state the examples clearly, it does not matter whether I choose the first choice or the second one and the third one vice versa.
In the beginning, the related research papers I have seen were all talking about the issue in the same point of view- scientific theories. Thus, my papers adopted their common ideas and talked of chromosome in my writings. However, I also found some other interesting articles pointed out that cultural problems and living background could more or less affected the sexual tendency. In the academic papers, although we would see many authors mentioned similar views, the authors still had their own ideas and gave out the result of their research to support themselves.
My very first topic was “ Rainbow,” which was the representative symbol of homosexuals. However, this topic, as the above mentioned, could be discussed in very broad ranges. Thus, it took me a lot of time to decide what aspect I should focus on. It was definitely a tough work. At the end of the meeting, I decided to try and change my writing a litter bit, and to deal more with the background of the homosexuals, and to add some of my opinions from the experience of my interacting with my friends. This would be huge reverse.

Do Gays Have a Choice?
By: Epstein, Robert. Scientific American Mind, Feb/Mar2006, Vol. 17 Issue 1, p50, 8p Abstract: Science offers a clear and surprising answer to a controversial question [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] (AN 23432303)

The author mentioned that homosexuality is nature born. In the other words, it has something to do with the chromosome. Most people might think that there was deep-rooted stereotype against gays and lesbians in the public. However, as time passed by, the author pointed out that sometimes it was the homosexuality that had the “ discrimination” against themselves. They searched for therapy so as to change themselves into so-called “ ordinary people” (straight guys.) Some may succeed eventually, but most could not. Most people have the tendency of being homosexuality; thus, the environment may affect some of them in some way. That is to say, some people could accept both genders. From the other aspect, some homosexuality could not change their sexual tendency if they have strong genetic tendencies.

Rainbow
“ We may not have in a traditional sense of raising up a family, but we take care of our family. We are very engaged with our parents, sisters, brothers, ...I think it was a misconception that black gay men don't want to have a children but I do want to have kids, ...” “ Is that being a gay is wrong ... so how can you really ever be one hundred percent proud of who you are in the society that does not accept us?” From the interview with some homosexual people, we, as the listeners, could understand their struggle and pain in heart.
In sum, a person should not be measured by the opinions of others. One should always love and accept oneself and others would treat them equally for sure.

Could Gay be Gay?(youtube)
Annotation:
Sometimes it is the Homosexuals themselves that cannot fight against the discrimination toward them. They considered much more things than the public. In other words, they care the public thought too much. They think that they might not be accepted by the public. However, nowadays, most people do treat them equally. The above mentioned can be proved in the Video. The boy in the video showed his panic.

Could Gay be Gay?
Is Homosexuality Abnormal?
Homosexuality is a description of those people who tend to love the same gender as they are. Those people are so-called gays or lesbians. Nowadays, homosexuality has become a controversial issue that provokes the public to think whether such sexual orientation is acceptable or not because it was once said to be shameful and abnormal. “ In the closet” is a form to describe such kind of situation that they suffer from. Since homosexuality was still not broadly accepted, those people are not allowed to pursue their love directly; thus, they suffer from great pain. However, as time went by, they started to fight for their rights for pursuing and expressing their affection to their love ones without being repelled; during these campaigns, conflicts could not be avoided. I am of the opinion that the concept of “ all men are created equal” can be used in this situation. Everyone has his/ her right to live in his/ her own style and pursue happiness. Homosexuality is nature born for sure; therefore, they should not be treated as abnormal people. There is a research that it happened not only in human world but also in animals’. In China, the public was said to accept this concept in the Han Dynasty. It was not until the discrimination of homosexuality spread into China that the Chinese started to show despise on them. Therefore, we should start to change the stereotype among those people by heart and not be influenced by the hatred that was not base on equality.

Is Homosexuality Abnormal?
Homosexuality is a description of those people who tend to love the same sex as they are. In other words, they are also called gays or lesbians. Nowadays, homosexuality has become a popular issue that provokes the public to think about whether it is acceptable or not because it was once said to be shameful and abnormal. “ In the closet” is a form to describe such kind of situation that they suffer from. Since this concept was still not normally accepted, they are not allowed to pursue their love directly; thus, they suffer from great pain. Homosexuality is nature born and has something to do with genes; therefore, they should not be treated as abnormal people.
